Flipped Classroom and Sustainable Development Goal 14
Flipped Classroom
Flipping the classroom is a pedagogical approach where students first explore new course content outside of class by viewing a pre-recorded lecture video or digital module, or completing a reading or preparatory assignment. In-class time is organized around student engagement, inquiry, and assessment, allowing students to grapple with, apply, and elaborate on course concepts. In-class sessions typically entail collaborative coursework and use of active learning strategies, including case studies, problem sets, or structured discussion.

SDG 14: Life below water
Goal 14 is about conserving and sustainably using the oceans, seas and marine resources. Healthy oceans and seas are essential to human existence and life on Earth.
The Ocean is intrinsic to our life on earth. Covering three-quarters of the Earth's surface, contain 97 percent of the Earth's water, and represent 99 percent of the living space on the planet by volume.
They provide key natural resources including food, medicines, biofuels and other products; help with the breakdown and removal of waste and pollution; and their coastal ecosystems act as buffers to reduce damage from storms. They also act as the planet's greatest carbon sink.
Worryingly, marine pollution is reaching extreme levels, with over 17 million metric tons clogging the ocean in 2021, a figure set to double or triple by 2040. Plastic is the most harmful type of ocean pollution.
A Flipped classroom activity
A Padlet with underwater images & a Canva whiteboard with "blue" thoughts
STEP 1 – Introduction: At home, students use the Google Earth's "The World's Oceans" feature to explore underwater environments. They upload a screenshot of an underwater image they liked the most to a Padlet and mention the ocean to which the photo belongs.
STEP 2: In class, students view the photos uploaded to Padlet by liking the one they like the most. Then, students watch the videos "Life Below Water 🌊 SDG 14 🐚 Sustainable Development Goals for Kids" and "Ocean Facts for Kids | Facts About Ocean Pollution" on Youtube to learn about life below water and oceans.

STEP 3 – Collaborative work:
In an online collaborative Canva whiteboard, students in groups
use sticky notes to share their thoughts about the 2 following
questions:
1- What are the main threats to life below water (pollution, overfishing, coral bleaching) and why should we care?
2- How can we, as individuals, help protect marine life?

Learning Goals
To gain knowledge about the challenges facing marine ecosystems and the importance of preserving life below water.
To develop critical thinking and teamwork skills while exploring real-world solutions for marine conservation.
To reflect on the importance of underwater sustainability.
